Biography

Saint Martinô Tho was a Vietnamese layman martyr born around 1787 in Ke Báng, Nam Ðinh, Vietnam. Not much is known about his early life, but his unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic Church would ultimately lead him to martyrdom. Martinô Tho lived during a time when Christianity faced severe persecution in Vietnam. Despite the dangerous circumstances, he openly practiced his faith and fearlessly spread the Gospel. Martinô Tho's deep love for Christ led him to become an influential figure among the Catholic community in his region. On 8 November 1840, in the village of Bay Mau, Hanoi, Vietnam, Martinô Tho was arrested and subjected to brutal torture for refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs. Even in the face of immense pain and suffering, he remained steadfast, refusing to abandon his faith. Finally, Martinô Tho was condemned to death by beheading, becoming a martyr for the Catholic faith. His extraordinary courage and willingness to lay down his life for his beliefs served as an inspiration to his fellow believers. The esteem in which Saint Martinô Tho was held was evident in the recognition he received from the Catholic Church. On 2 July 1899, Pope Leo XIII officially decreed the veneration of Martinô Tho as a martyr. A year later, on 27 May 1900, the same Pope beatified him, recognizing his sanctity and the sacrifice he made for his faith. However, it was not until 19 June 1988, under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, that Saint Martinô Tho was canonized, thereby becoming an official Catholic saint. This was a significant honor, cementing his place in the annals of Catholic history. While there is no specific patronage associated with Saint Martinô Tho, his example of unwavering faith and martyrdom serves as an inspiration for all Catholics facing adversity. Saint Martinô Tho's feast days are celebrated on 8 November, the day he was executed, and 24 November, alongside other Martyrs of Vietnam who stood up for their faith during the anti-Catholic persecutions in Vietnam. As a layman martyr, Saint Martinô Tho represents the powerful witness of ordinary individuals who remain steadfast in their faith even in the face of immense persecution. His life story serves as a reminder of the enduring strength and courage that can be found in the most devout of believers.
