Biography

Saint Maria Zheng Xu, also known as Mali or Zheng Xu Maria, was a remarkable young girl who grew up in a Christian-run orphanage in Wangla, a part of the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. Born around 1889 in Kou, Dongguang, Hebei, she lived during a tumultuous period in Chinese history known as the Boxer Rebellion. Early on, it was evident that Maria had a deep love for Christ and a strong faith. She embraced her Christian upbringing and lived her life in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Maria's devotion to her faith only grew stronger as she faced the challenges and dangers of the time. The Boxer Rebellion erupted in China in 1899, fueled by anti-foreign sentiment and a desire to rid the country of any Western influence, including Christianity. As the Boxers gained momentum and violence escalated, Christians, especially missionaries and those associated with them, became targets for persecution and even martyrdom. Despite the increasing danger, Maria refused to renounce her faith or abandon her Christian brothers and sisters. She remained steadfast in her devotion, clinging to her beliefs even when faced with brutal opposition. On June 28, 1900, tragedy struck the Christian community in Wangla. The Boxers attacked the orphanage where Maria resided, seeking to annihilate their Christian beliefs and those who adhered to them. Maria and her companions were subjected to unimaginable terror, yet they never wavered in their faith. Having witnessed countless acts of violence against her fellow Christians, Maria was ultimately martyred for her unwavering commitment to Christ. She willingly sacrificed her life rather than renounce her faith, becoming an inspiration and a true embodiment of Christian courage. In recognition of her martyrdom, Maria was venerated on February 22, 1955, by Pope Pius XII, who declared her a martyr. Just a few months later, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified her, acknowledging her heroic virtue and her sacrifice for the sake of Christ. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Maria Zheng Xu, declaring her a saint of the Catholic Church. Her canonization serves as a testament to her exemplary faith and unwavering commitment to Christ amid a time of great persecution. Though we do not have any information about Maria's patronage, her life and death stand as a powerful example of faith, courage, and selflessness. Saint Maria Zheng Xu continues to inspire countless believers around the world, reminding us of the profound impact that even the youngest and seemingly insignificant among us can have on the Church and the world.
