Biography

Saint Anastasia Guadalupe García Zavala, also known as Sister María Guadalupe, Maria Guadalupe García Zavala, or Mother Lupita, was born on April 27, 1878, in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. She was the daughter of Fortino García and Refugio Zavala de García. Anastasia grew up in a devout Catholic family and developed a strong devotion to Our Lady of Zapopan. As a young woman, Anastasia was engaged to be married. However, she felt a deep calling to religious life and decided to follow her vocation. Alongside Father Cipriano Iñiguez, she co-founded the Handmaids of Saint Margaret Mary and of the Poor. Anastasia served as the religious order's first mother superior, dedicating her life to the service of God and the poor. One of Anastasia's notable roles was working as a nurse to the poor. She tirelessly provided medical care to those in need, showing them compassion and love. The Handmaids of Saint Margaret Mary and of the Poor, under Anastasia's guidance, established a hospital to better care for the sick and destitute. Despite their noble mission, the Handmaids often faced financial difficulties. In these challenging times, Anastasia would venture out to beg for money to support their hospital and ensure the continuation of their important work. Her selflessness and commitment to serving the marginalized were truly inspiring. Anastasia's dedication to her faith and her fellow Catholics extended beyond her work as a nurse. During the Mexican Revolution, when anti-Catholic sentiments were high, she fearlessly sheltered priests and the archbishop of Guadalajara. Despite the great risks involved, Anastasia hid them from the authorities, protecting them and enabling them to continue their ministry. Saint Anastasia Guadalupe García Zavala was known for her humility, unwavering faith, and unwavering dedication to helping the poor and marginalized. Her exemplary life of service and compassion drew the attention of the Catholic Church, and she was venerated on July 1, 2000, by Pope John Paul II, who declared her heroic in virtues. On April 25, 2004, Pope John Paul II beatified Anastasia, recognizing her as a blessed soul who had attained a special place in heaven. Finally, on May 12, 2013, in Rome, Italy, she was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis, who acknowledged her sanctity and the profound impact of her life. Though Anastasia Guadalupe García Zavala does not have a specific patronage attributed to her, she stands as a model of selflessness, love, and dedication to God and the poor. Her life serves as an inspiration to all those who strive to live out their faith through acts of mercy and service.
