Saint Maria Rita Lópes Pontes De Souza Brito, also known as Sister Dulce, Dulce Lopes Pontes, and The Good Angel of Bahia, was a prominent figure in the Catholic faith, particularly in Brazil. She was born on May 26, 1914, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and dedicated her life to serving the poor and marginalized communities. Maria Rita Lópes Pontes De Souza Brito became a nun in the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and embarked on a mission to improve the lives of those in need. She founded the first Catholic workers' organization in the state of Bahia, Brazil, advocating for the rights and well-being of the working class. Recognizing the dire health conditions faced by the impoverished population, Sister Dulce established a clinic specifically for the poor. This clinic served as a stepping stone for her further endeavors in healthcare. She went on to found a school for working families, which provided education and vocational training to help individuals break free from the cycle of poverty. Driven by her deep compassion and desire to alleviate suffering, Sister Dulce took her mission even further by establishing a hospital, an orphanage, and care centers for the elderly and disabled. These initiatives provided essential medical care, comfort, and support to those who had no other means of assistance. Sister Dulce's selfless dedication to her work did not go unnoticed, and her impact gained national and international recognition. In 1988, Brazilian president Jose Sarney nominated her for the Nobel Peace Prize, acknowledging the profound impact she had made through her tireless efforts. Pope Saint John Paul II, who recognized the significance of Sister Dulce's work, met her during his first trip to Brazil in 1980. Deeply moved by her compassion and commitment to the most vulnerable members of society, he referred to her work as "an example for humanity." In 1991, Pope John Paul II visited Sister Dulce in the hospital, further affirming his admiration for her tireless service. After her passing on March 13, 1992, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, Sister Dulce's virtuous life and exceptional work continued to inspire others. Her heroic virtues were officially recognized on April 3, 2009, by Pope Benedict XVI. On May 22, 2011, she was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI, with her beatification further affirming her exemplary life of faith, service, and dedication. Finally, on October 13, 2019, Pope Francis canonized Sister Dulce at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy, declaring her a saint of the Catholic Church. Although she does not have a specific patronage, her legacy and example continue to inspire individuals around the world to help those in need and champion social justice.
