Feast Day: June 28
Death: June 28, 1900
Saint Maria Chi Yu, also known as Mali, Chi Yu Maria, and Maria Ts’i-u, was a young girl who grew up in a Christian-run orphanage in Wangla, a part of the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. She was born around the year 1885 in Daji, Wuqiao, Hebei, China. Despite the challenges she faced growing up as an orphan, Maria's faith in Christ grew stronger each day. During the Boxer Rebellion, a violent uprising against foreign influence and Christian missionaries in China, Maria's unwavering commitment to her Catholic faith led to her martyrdom. On the fateful day of 28 June 1900, she faced persecution and ultimately embraced a violent death for her refusal to renounce her Christian beliefs. Her martyrdom took place in Wangla, Dongguang, Hebei, China. The recognition of Saint Maria Chi Yu's holiness came many years after her death. On 22 February 1955, Pope Pius XII decreed her venerable, acknowledging her heroic virtues and the example of faith she had shown. Just two months later, on 17 April 1955, she was beatified by the same Pope. This official recognition of her beatification elevated her status as a martyr and servant of God. It wasn't until the pontificate of Pope John Paul II that Maria Chi Yu's holiness was further acknowledged. On 1 October 2000, she was finally canonized, thereby granted the title of Saint. This was a momentous occasion, as her sanctity was celebrated and honored by the Catholic Church worldwide. Although there are no specific patronages or representations associated with Saint Maria Chi Yu, her life and martyrdom continue to serve as an inspiration to all Christians. Her story highlights the immense courage and unwavering faith of those who are willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of their beliefs. Saint Maria Chi Yu is remembered and venerated annually on her feast day, which is celebrated on 28 June. On this day, faithful Catholics honor her memory and seek her intercession. Her life serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals in their pursuit of faith and love for Christ.
