Biography

Saint Marcellinus of Embrun, also known as Marcellinus of Ambrun, was a priest and missionary who lived in the early 4th century. He was the first Bishop of Embrun, France, and was consecrated by Saint Eusebius of Vercelli. Born in North Africa, Marcellinus dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Christianity in the Dauphiné area of France and Switzerland. He was known for his strong faith and zealous missionary work, converting many to the Christian faith. During his time as Bishop of Embrun, the region faced the challenges of the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. Marcellinus firmly defended the orthodox teachings of the Catholic Church, which led to his persecution and eventual exile. Forced to flee to the mountains, Marcellinus continued to care for his diocese from his place of exile. He organized and supported the local Christian communities, ensuring that the faithful had access to the sacraments and spiritual guidance. Saint Marcellinus of Embrun lived a life of selflessness and dedication to his faith, leading by example and inspiring others with his unwavering commitment to the Gospel. He ministered to the spiritual needs of his flock, despite the dangers and challenges he faced. He died around 374 AD of natural causes. His relics were transferred to Digne-les-Bains, France in the 10th century, where they were venerated by the faithful. Unfortunately, during the anti-Christian excesses of the French Revolution, his relics were destroyed along with countless other sacred artifacts. Saint Marcellinus of Embrun was recognized for his holiness and devotion to the Church. Although his formal canonization took place before the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, he is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. While Saint Marcellinus of Embrun's representation is unknown, his feast day is celebrated on April 20th. He is remembered as a courageous and faithful bishop, a role model for all believers. Although he faced persecution and exile, he remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ and his Church, leaving behind a legacy of faith and resilience.
