Biography

Saint Maelrubius of Applecross, also known as Errew, Maelrubba, Maelrubha, Malrubius, Maolrubha, Ma-Rui, Melrubio, Molroy, and Sagart-Ruadh, was born in 642 in County Derry, Ireland. He was the son of Elganach and Subtan and was related to King Niall of Ireland and Saint Comgall the Great. Maelrubius began his monastic journey at Saint Comgall's monastery in Bangor, Ireland. There, he dedicated himself to a life of prayer, meditation, and learning. After spending time at this renowned monastery, he joined the monastic community at Iona Abbey, an important spiritual center in the early Christian Church. As his devotion grew, Maelrubius felt called to spread the teachings of Christianity beyond the borders of Ireland. He embarked on missionary journeys, founding several churches in Scotland. Eventually, he settled in Applecross, Scotland, where he established a church and monastery in the middle of the land of the Picts. Serving as an abbot, Maelrubius became a key figure in the spiritual and religious development of the communities he served. He dedicated his efforts to preaching, teaching, and supporting those around him in their faith. Maelrubius's influence extended beyond Applecross, as he also served as a missionary to various regions, including Skye, Lewis, Forres, Keith, Loch Shinn, Durness, and Farr. However, Maelrubius's commitment to spreading the Gospel would eventually lead to his martyrdom. While attempting to preach to Danish Vikings, he was killed by the invaders who opposed his message. Maelrubius died a martyr's death on 21 April 722, near Teampull, Scotland. Following his death, Maelrubius was buried near his last monk's cell, close to the River Navar. He was revered for his dedication, holiness, and sacrifice, and at least 21 Scottish churches are dedicated to him. Although his representation is unknown, his legacy as a devoted monk, missionary, and martyr lives on. Saint Maelrubius of Applecross was canonized before the official process of canonization was established. Therefore, he is considered a saint in the pre-congregation era of the Catholic Church. He is commemorated on 21 April in Ireland and 27 August in Scotland. While Saint Maelrubius does not have a specific patronage associated with him, he remains an inspiration for those seeking to follow the example of a faithful servant of God. His life and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the importance of living out one's Christian faith and spreading the Gospel, even in the face of adversity.
