Saint Macrina The Elder, also known as Macrina of Caesarea, Macrina of Neo-Caesarea, Macrina the Senior, and Macrina l’Anziana, was a remarkable woman who played a significant role in the early Christian Church. She was born in the early fourth century and is primarily remembered as the grandmother of Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, Saint Peter of Sebaste, and Saint Macrina the Younger. Macrina's journey in faith began under the tutelage of the renowned Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus, who recognized her spiritual potential and guided her in matters of faith. Macrina, along with her husband, lived in hiding in the forest of Pontus for seven years during the persecutions of Diocletian. The couple faced great hardships and endured near-starvation on multiple occasions. However, their unwavering faith and devotion kept them strong throughout this trying period. Following the death of her husband, Macrina dedicated herself to a life of asceticism and became a hermitess. Her deep spiritual wisdom and her virtuous life attracted many individuals seeking guidance and support, including her famous grandson, Saint Basil the Great. It is believed that Macrina played a significant role in raising and nurturing Basil, who would go on to become one of the most influential theologians and leaders of the early Church. In her hermetic life, Saint Macrina was often depicted with two stags or two hinds near her, symbolizing the flourishing of spiritual virtues and the harmonious coexistence of different aspects of creation in her presence.
