Biography

Saint Lucidus of Aquara, also known as Lucido, was born in the latter part of the 9th century in Aquara, Italy. He was the son of Albino della Croce and Sabina Nicodemo. At the age of 15, Lucidus joined Saint Peter's Abbey near Aquara as a monk, where he received his religious training. After completing his formation, Lucidus served in various places, including Saint Peter's Abbey, Monte Cassino Abbey, and in the city of Salerno, Italy. During his time in Salerno, he became a trusted counselor to Prince Guaimaro, offering guidance and advice to the ruler. One of Lucidus' notable achievements was his pilgrimage to the Holy Lands, where he deepened his spirituality and grew in holiness. Inspired by his experiences, he decided to found the monastery of Santa Maria dell Albabeta near Montecassino. Lucidus served as the prior of this monastery, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, study, and service to the community. Saint Lucidus of Aquara is most remembered for his wisdom, humility, and devotion to God. He lived a simple and pious life, exemplifying the virtues of a true Christian. His reputation for sanctity spread, and many sought his counsel and prayers. Tragically, the relics of Saint Lucidus faced a tumultuous history. Initially, they were enshrined in a wooden and copper bust at the church of Saint Peter in the monastery in Aquara. Later, the relics were moved to the parish church of Saint Nicholas in 1500. To protect and honor the relics, a silver reliquary was created. However, on March 23, 1895, the reliquary and relics were stolen. Fortunately, they were discovered hidden in a nearby collapsing farmhouse on July 31, 1895, and returned to the church in a solemn procession. A new silver reliquary was fashioned, and the relics were re-enshrined in it. Unfortunately, history repeated itself on March 1, 1975, when the silver reliquary was stolen once again. Regrettably, these sacred artifacts have not been recovered up until today. However, to continue honoring the memory of Saint Lucidus, a new statue has replaced the stolen reliquary in the church. Saint Lucidus of Aquara was officially canonized on January 8, 1880, by Pope Leo XIII, who confirmed his cultus. He is revered as the patron saint of Aquara, Italy. Though the relics may be lost, the spiritual legacy of Saint Lucidus lives on, inspiring believers to embrace a life of faith, prayer, and service.
