Biography

Saint Lucerius, also known as Lucerio, was a devout Benedictine monk who lived during the early medieval period. He was born in Italy and served as a spiritual student under Saint Thomas of Farfa. Lucerius eventually became the second abbot of the monastery at Maurienne, France, a position he held from 723 until his death in 740. Little is known about Saint Lucerius' early life, but it is believed that he entered the monastic life at a young age. He joined the Benedictine Order and dedicated himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to God. Saint Lucerius' mentor and spiritual guide, Saint Thomas of Farfa, played a significant role in his formation as a monk. Saint Thomas was known for his holiness and wisdom, and Lucerius absorbed his teachings and incorporated them into his own spiritual journey. In 723, Lucerius was appointed as the abbot of the monastery at Maurienne in France. This was a challenging time for the region as it was plagued by wars and conflicts. Despite the turmoil and instability, Lucerius managed to hold the monastery together and provide a stable spiritual foundation for the monks under his care. Throughout his tenure as abbot, Saint Lucerius worked diligently to uphold the monastic values of the Benedictine Order. He emphasized the importance of obedience, humility, and devotion to God. Under his guidance, the monastery at Maurienne flourished, becoming a place of prayer, study, and spiritual growth. Saint Lucerius was deeply respected by his fellow monks for his piety, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to his religious vocation. During his time as abbot, he acted as a shepherd to his community, guiding them through difficult times and inspiring them to remain steadfast in their faith. After many years of dedicated service, Saint Lucerius passed away in 740 of natural causes. His death was mourned by the monks of Maurienne and the wider community who recognized his holiness and sanctity of life. Although not much is known about Saint Lucerius' specific patronage, his life and teachings continue to inspire and encourage those who seek a deeper relationship with God. His feast day is celebrated on December 10 by the monks of Farfa, honoring his connection to the monastery and the spiritual lineage of Saint Thomas. While Saint Lucerius' representation is not specified, he is remembered as a devoted monk, an able administrator, and a spiritual leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of holiness. Though not officially canonized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, he is recognized as a saint within the pre-congregation period of the Catholic Church. Saint Lucerius' humble and faithful life serves as an example to all who seek to live a life of virtue and closeness to God. His dedication to his fellow monks and his unwavering commitment to his religious duties make him a model for monastic communities and all believers.
