Feast Day: January 13
Death: January 13, 1859
Saint Luca Pham Trong Thìn, also known as Luca (Cai) Thin, was born around 1819 in Quan Cong, Nam Ðinh, Vietnam. He lived during a time of great persecution against Christians in Vietnam under the reign of Emperor Tu-Duc. Despite the dangers and hardships that came with professing the Catholic faith, Saint Luca remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ. Luca Pham Trong Thìn was a married lay person and a devoted member of the Dominican Order. He and his wife were actively involved in the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin, working alongside the Catholic missionaries to spread the teachings of the Church. They embraced their Christian calling with great love and zeal, serving as true witnesses of the Gospel. During the reign of Emperor Tu-Duc, the persecution of Christians intensified, and authorities issued an order for all Christians to renounce their faith by stomping on a cross. However, Saint Luca, along with many other faithful Catholics, refused to deny their Lord. Conscious of the immense value of the cross, they willingly chose to face persecution and even death, rather than trample on this sacred symbol. Saint Luca Pham Trong Thìn's faith and conviction shone brightly even in the face of unimaginable suffering. He endured cruel torture, hoping to weaken his spirit and make him surrender to the emperor's demands. However, he remained strong and unwavering, demonstrating extraordinary courage and faith in God. Ultimately, on January 13, 1859, Saint Luca Pham Trong Thìn was martyred for his unwavering devotion to Christ. He joined the ranks of countless Vietnamese martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of their faith. Their witness and sacrifice continue to inspire and strengthen the Catholic Church in Vietnam and around the world. Recognizing the sanctity and heroic virtue of Saint Luca Pham Trong Thìn, Pope Pius XII decreed his martyrdom on February 11, 1951. Only a few months later, on April 29, 1951, Pope Pius XII beatified him. Finally, on June 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Luca, affirming his holiness and exemplifying his ultimate victory through martyrdom. Saint Luca Pham Trong Thìn serves as a powerful reminder of the price many faithful Catholics paid for their belief in Christ. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and encourage Christians to remain faithful in the face of adversity and persecution. As a patron saint, his intercession is sought for the strength to endure trials and to stand firm in the face of persecution.
