Biography

Saint Liberalis of Treviso, also known as Liberalis of Altino or Liberale of Ancona, was a priest and a devoted servant of Christ in the 4th century. He is renowned for his relentless efforts to convert Arians to orthodox Christianity, despite facing tremendous hardships and abuse from them. Born near Ancona, Italy, Saint Liberalis dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel and defending the true faith. Saint Liberalis focused his missionary work in the region of Altino and Treviso, where the Arian heresy had gained significant influence. He fearlessly preached the teachings of the Catholic Church, emphasizing the divinity of Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity. His unwavering conviction in the truth of orthodox Christianity drew many converts to the faith, which, in turn, infuriated the Arians. The Arians, a heretical Christian sect, subjected Saint Liberalis to numerous forms of abuse, both physical and verbal, for his persistent efforts in challenging their beliefs. Despite these hardships, Saint Liberalis remained steadfast in his mission, unyielding in his commitment to lead people towards the true path of salvation and proclaim the orthodox Christian faith. In his later years, Saint Liberalis decided to retreat from the difficulties of everyday life and sought refuge as a hermit on a small island. There, he dedicated himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and solitude, seeking a closer union with God. The island became a sanctuary from the trials he had experienced during his missionary work and allowed him to deepen his relationship with the Divine. After a long and virtuous life, Saint Liberalis passed away around the year 400. His relics were venerated by the faithful and brought to Treviso, Italy, in 452 by parishioners fleeing invading Huns. The presence of his relics became a source of immense spiritual comfort and strength for the people of Treviso, who regarded Saint Liberalis as a powerful intercessor and protector. Saint Liberalis of Treviso was canonized as a saint in the Pre-Congregation era, meaning that his sainthood predates the official canonization process established by the Catholic Church.
