Biography

Saint Leonides of Palmyra, also known as Sister of Saint Libya of Palmyra, was a courageous and devout Christian woman who lived during the time of the Roman Empire. Unfortunately, very little information is available about her life and her background, but her memory has been preserved through the annals of our rich Catholic history. Belonging to the Pre-Congregation period, Saint Leonides was martyred during the persecutions of Diocletian, which took place between 303 and 311 AD. These persecutions were some of the harshest and bloodiest in the history of the early Christian Church. Despite the scarcity of details surrounding her life, her bravery and faithfulness to Christ in the face of extreme hostility should not be overlooked. Saint Leonides met her tragic end when she was burned at the stake in 303 AD in her hometown of Palmyra, Syria. This gruesome method of execution was often employed by the Roman authorities to instill fear and deter the spread of Christianity. However, rather than allowing fear to dictate her actions, Saint Leonides courageously embraced her faith until the very end, becoming a martyr for Christ.
