Feast Day: June 3
Saint Justus of Alcala, also known as Saint Justus of Spain, was a young Christian martyr who lived during the 3rd century in Spain. He was born around 291 in the town of Alcala, near Madrid, Spain. Justus was the brother of another well-known saint, Saint Pastor. At a very young age, Saint Justus openly professed his faith in Christianity, despite the dangers and persecutions faced by Christians during that time. His boldness caught the attention of Dacian, the governor of Spain, who ordered his immediate arrest. Saint Justus was subjected to severe torture and scourging in an attempt to force him to renounce his faith. Even in the face of immense pain and suffering, the young boy remained steadfast in his conviction and refused to retract his confession. Despite his tender age, Saint Justus displayed incredible courage and unwavering faith throughout his ordeal. His unwavering commitment to Christ ultimately led to his martyrdom. Saint Justus was beheaded at the young age of 13 in the year 304 in Alcala, Spain. The life and martyrdom of Saint Justus serve as a powerful example of unyielding faith, even in the face of persecution and adversity. His story continues to inspire Christians around the world to stand firm in their beliefs and never waver in their commitment to Christ. Saint Justus of Alcala has been recognized by the Catholic Church as a saint, though his canonization occurred prior to the formal canonization process. He is considered a pre-congregation saint, meaning he was venerated and recognized as a saint by the Church before the establishment of the formal canonization process. The feast day of Saint Justus is celebrated on August 6th each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. He is venerated as the patron saint of several places in Spain, including Alcala de Henares, the diocese of Alcala, and Madrid. The life and courageous witness of Saint Justus of Alcala continue to be celebrated and honored by Catholics worldwide. His story serves as a reminder of the bravery and unwavering faith of young people, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and to remain steadfast in their commitment to Christ, no matter the circumstances.
