Biography

Saint Felix de Atarés, also known as Brother Felix, was a revered figure in the Catholic tradition. He was born in Saragossa, Spain, and little is known about his early life. However, it is believed that he lived during the 8th century, roughly around the year 750. Saint Felix was the brother of another renowned saint, Saint Votus. While Votus pursued a path of religious devotion in a different manner, Felix found solace and spirituality as a hermit in the Pyrenees mountains. He settled beneath a massive rock formation, where the famous Benedictine abbey of San Juan de Peña would later be built. This area eventually became a significant center of Christianity in the regions of Navarre and Aragon. As a hermit, Saint Felix led a life of seclusion and contemplation, dedicating himself to prayer and spiritual reflection. He embraced the solitude of his surroundings, finding peace and harmony within the natural beauty of the Pyrenees. His deep connection with God and unwavering faith enabled him to sustain a life of simplicity and humility. While Saint Felix did not gain widespread recognition during his lifetime, his devoutness and commitment to God did not go unnoticed. The local people revered him for his exemplary virtue and sought his wisdom and guidance. Many sought out his hermitage to seek his counsel and receive his blessings. Saint Felix de Atarés passed away around the year 750, dying of natural causes. His final days were filled with serenity and contentment as he prepared to meet his Creator. Although not officially recognized as a patron saint and with little information about his specific representations, his memory has been preserved through the ages by those who were touched by his humble life and spiritual teachings. While the formal process of canonization as we know it today did not exist during Saint Felix’s time, he came to be revered as a saint by popular acclamation. His sanctity and profound spirituality were recognized by the faithful, who saw in him an exceptional example of a life dedicated to God. Even though Saint Felix de Atarés may not be widely known, his legacy lives on, inspiring individuals to cultivate a deep relationship with God and seek solace in prayer and contemplation. His feast day is celebrated on May 29th, serving as a reminder of his unwavering faith and his enduring impact on the spiritual lives of those who honor him.
