Feast Day: December 23
Death: December 1, 23
Saint Joseph Cho Yunho, also known as Iosephus Cho Yun-ho or Yosep Jo Yun-ho, was a young layman and martyr born in 1848 in Sinchang, Chungcheong-do, South Korea. He grew up on a farm in the apostolic vicariate of Korea and was the son of Saint Peter Cho Hwa-so, another revered martyr from the same region. Joseph was raised in a devout Catholic family, and from a young age, he displayed a deep love for God and the Catholic faith. He was known for his piety, humility, and sincere devotion. As Joseph grew older, he took on the role of a catechist, actively spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church to those around him. During the 19th century, Korea faced immense persecution against Christians, led by the Joseon dynasty. The authorities oppressed and cracked down on the Catholic community in an attempt to eradicate the faith from the country. Joseph, along with many other believers, faced the cruelty and persecution of the authorities who saw Catholicism as a threat to the traditional Confucian values of the dynasty. Joseph's faith was tested severely in the midst of this intense persecution. He endured physical torture, threats to renounce his faith, and constant pressure to reject Christianity. However, Joseph remained steadfast in his beliefs, refusing to renounce his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. On 23 December 1866, in Supjeong-i, Jeongju, Chungcheong-do, Joseph was brutally beaten to death for his unwavering faith. He died as a martyr, courageously giving his life for the sake of the Gospel. His death was a testimony to his profound love for Christ and his commitment to the Catholic Church. Years later, on 4 July, Pope Paul VI recognized Joseph's martyrdom by decree. The Pope acknowledged the heroic virtue exhibited by Joseph and beatified him on 6 October. His beatification served as recognition of his sacrifice and an inspiration to the faithful. Finally, on 6 May 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Joseph Cho Yunho, formally acknowledging him as a saint of the Catholic Church. Joseph's canonization was a testament to his holiness, faithfulness, and his profound impact on the growth of Christianity in Korea. While there is no specific patronage associated with Saint Joseph Cho Yunho, his life and martyrdom stand as a witness to the power of faith and the courage to stand up for one's beliefs, even in the midst of intense persecution. His feast day is celebrated on 23 December, and he is also remembered as one of the Martyrs of Korea on 20 September. Saint Joseph Cho Yunho continues to inspire and intercede for believers around the world.
