Saint Jacinto Castañeda Puchasóns, also known as Hyacint Castañeda or Hyacinth Castañeda, was a Dominican priest and missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the Catholic faith in the Philippines, China, and Tonkin. He was born on November 13, 1743, in Xàtiva, Valencia, Spain. From an early age, Jacinto felt a calling to the priesthood and joined the Dominican Order. After completing his studies and being ordained, he set out on his missionary journey, arriving in the Philippines in the late 1760s. During his time in the Philippines, Jacinto worked tirelessly to convert the local populations to Christianity and played an instrumental role in establishing and strengthening the Catholic Church in the region. In 1772, Jacinto was sent to China to continue his mission work. Despite facing numerous challenges and dangers, he fearlessly preached the Gospel and worked among the Chinese communities, striving to bring them closer to God. His dedication to his vocation and his unwavering faith in the face of adversity made him a respected figure among the local people. However, in 1773, during the persecutions of Trinh Sam, a Vietnamese lord who sought to eradicate Catholicism, Jacinto was captured and put to death for his faith. On November 7, 1773, he was beheaded in Ðong Mo, Ha Tay, Vietnam, becoming a martyr for his commitment to Christ and the Church. The life and martyrdom of Jacinto Castañeda Puchasóns did not go unnoticed by the Catholic Church. He was venerated on April 27, 1904, by Pope Saint Pius X, who issued a decree on martyrdom. The recognition of his virtuous life and sacrificial death led to his beatification on May 20, 1906, also by Pope Saint Pius X. It was not until June 19, 1988, that Jacinto was finally canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II. His canonization ceremony served as a testament to his exemplary spirituality, his selfless dedication to the evangelization of the Philippines, China, and Tonkin, and his ultimate sacrifice for the love of God. Although he does not have a specific patronage attributed to him, Saint Jacinto Castañeda Puchasóns serves as an inspiration to all Christians, particularly those engaged in missionary work. His life reminds us of the importance of spreading the Gospel, even in the face of persecution and adversity.
