Biography

Saint John The Physician, also known as John the Almoner or John Eleimon or John of Alexandria, was an esteemed figure in the early Christian era. He hailed from Syria and is widely recognized as an Arab physician. Not much is known about his early life, but he is believed to have lived during the fourth century. Saint John The Physician is particularly renowned for his close friendship with another well-known physician and martyr, Saint Cyrus. The two were inseparable companions, and their bond was strengthened by their shared devotion to their faith. It is often mentioned that John may have been a monk himself or led a lifestyle akin to that of a monk due to his ascetic practices and dedication to prayer. During the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian, both Saint John The Physician and Saint Cyrus faced unimaginable hardships. Alongside them, the noble Saint Athanasia and her three daughters also stood firm in their faith. Sadly, all four were subjected to torture and ultimately martyred for their refusal to renounce Christianity. The date of the martyrdom of Saint John The Physician and his compatriots is recorded as sometime in the year 312. They were beheaded in Alexandria, Egypt, for their steadfast faith and commitment to their Christian beliefs. Though this act of martyrdom was meant to extinguish their influence, it ended up becoming a catalyst for their continued veneration. Following their deaths, the relics of Saint John The Physician, Saint Cyrus, Saint Athanasia, and her daughters were reverently transferred to Rome, Italy. They found their resting place there, becoming a source of solace and inspiration for countless faithful who sought their intercession and guidance. While specific details about the life and works of Saint John The Physician may be scarce, his memory is honored on his feast day, which falls on January 31st.
