Biography

Saint John Osorinus, also known as John of Trau or John of Trogir, was a revered Catholic saint who lived during the medieval period. Born in the eleventh century, he embarked on a life devoted to spirituality and service to the Church, leaving a remarkable legacy behind. John Osorinus spent much of his life as a hermit at the Camaldolese monastery situated at Ossero, which is located on the picturesque island of Cres. This secluded lifestyle afforded him the opportunity to deepen his relationship with God and pursue a life of contemplation. Through rigorous prayer and ascetic practices, he sought to attain spiritual enlightenment and holiness. However, destiny had other plans for John Osorinus, as he was called to take on an important ecclesiastical role. He became the first bishop of Trogir, a city situated in modern-day Croatia, around the year 1070. This appointment marked the beginning of a new phase in his life, one that demanded his leadership and wisdom. As bishop, John Osorinus exemplified the virtues of compassion, humility, and selflessness. He tirelessly dedicated himself to the welfare of his flock, providing spiritual guidance, and tending to their physical and emotional needs. During his time as bishop, Trogir faced a grave threat when King Coloman of Hungary sought to exert control over the city.
