Little is known about Johannes Ri's life and background, except for the fact that he was a dedicated Catholic. He was not a clergyman but a lay man who played a significant role in the spread of Catholicism in Korea during a time of intense persecution. Johannes Ri's commitment to his faith was so strong that he willingly embraced martyrdom. During a time when Catholicism was heavily persecuted in Korea, he courageously stood up for his religious beliefs and refused to renounce his faith. As a result, he was arrested and imprisoned. This letter not only reveals his unwavering commitment to his beliefs but also serves as a testament to his inner strength and resilience in the face of persecution. Johannes Ri's extraordinary faith and steadfastness captured the attention of the Catholic Church, leading to his beatification on 6 June 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Nearly six decades later, on 6 May 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized him as a saint, recognizing his martyrdom and the inspiration he continues to provide to Catholics around the world. Although not associated with any specific patronage, Saint Johannes Ri's life serves as an example of courage, conviction, and unwavering faith in the face of adversity. His feast day is celebrated on 21 September each year, a day dedicated to honoring his memory and acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the Catholic Church.
