Biography

Saint Jacobo Kyushei Gorobioye Tomonaga De Santa María, also known as Giacomo Kyushei Gorobioye Tomonaga, Iacobus of Saint Mary, Iacobus Tomonaga Gorobioye, and Jakob Kyushei Gorobioye Tomanga, was a dedicated catechist and missionary in Japan during a time of intense persecution against Catholics. Born in 1582 in Kyudetsu, Nagasaki, Japan, Jacobo grew up in a region where Catholicism was spreading rapidly despite its prohibition. As a young man, he felt a strong calling to serve God and joined the Dominican Order in Manila, Philippines. After his ordination in 1626, he eagerly returned to his homeland as a missionary, fully aware of the dangers that awaited him. Jacobo dedicated himself to ministering to covert Catholics, who were forced to practice their faith in secret due to the government's harsh policies against Christianity. He worked closely with another revered figure, Saint Michael Kurobyoe, in bringing comfort, sacraments, and support to the faithful in their time of immense hardship. However, their efforts did not go unnoticed by the authorities. In July 1633, Jacobo was arrested for his role in spreading Christianity. Despite being subjected to brutal torture and knowing the risks involved, he steadfastly refused to renounce his faith or betray his fellow Christians. On August 17, 1633, Jacobo was executed for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church. His martyrdom was a testament to his faith and devotion, inspiring countless others to persevere in the face of severe persecution. Even though his body was cremated, his ashes were thrown into the sea as an attempt to erase any evidence of his existence. However, this act only served to strengthen his legacy as a martyr for the faith. In recognition of his sacrifice, Pope John Paul II decreed the veneration of Saint Jacobo Kyushei Gorobioye Tomonaga De Santa María on October 11, 1980. Later, on February 18, 1981, the Pope beatified him during a ceremony in Manila, Philippines. Finally, on October 18, 1987, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Jacobo Kyushei Gorobioye Tomonaga De Santa María as a saint of the Catholic Church. The canonization took place at Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome, Italy, further solidifying his position as a role model of unwavering faith and devotion. While Saint Jacobo's representation remains unknown and he does not have a known patronage, his courageous life and martyrdom continue to inspire believers and remind us of the countless sacrifices made by individuals like him in the pursuit of their religious beliefs.
