Feast Day: June 10
Saint Ithamar of Rochester, also known as Itamaro or Ythamar, was a renowned figure in his time for his exceptional learning and devout Christian life. He holds the distinction of being the first Anglo-Saxon to be ordained a bishop, succeeding Saint Paulinus of York to the see of Rochester, England in the year 644. Little is known about Saint Ithamar's early life and background, but it is believed that he was born in Kent, England. His love for knowledge and dedication to the Christian faith propelled him to pursue a life of scholarship and holiness. In 644, Saint Ithamar was consecrated as the Bishop of Rochester by the influential Saint Honorius, who himself was the Archbishop of Canterbury. This appointment marked a significant milestone in the Christian history of England, as Saint Ithamar became the first native Anglo-Saxon to hold the position of a bishop. Though not much is recorded about his specific actions or teachings during his time as Bishop of Rochester, Saint Ithamar was highly regarded for his humility, wisdom, and compassion towards his flock. His ministry was marked by a steadfast commitment to spreading the Gospel and guiding others in their faith. After his death, Saint Ithamar's tomb became the site of numerous miraculous cures, particularly for ailments affecting the eyes. The faithful believed that his intercession, even after his passing, continued to bring about divine healing to those who sought his aid. Saint Ithamar of Rochester passed away around the year 656 due to natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of sanctity and wisdom. He was buried in Rochester, England, where his tomb remained a place of pilgrimage and devotion. Recognizing his exemplary life and the countless favors attributed to his intercession, Saint Ithamar was eventually recognized as a saint before the process of canonization was formalized. His canonization took place prior to the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and thus he belongs to the category of pre-congregation saints. Today, Saint Ithamar is venerated as a holy bishop and a model of learning, humility, and holiness. Though he may not have specific patronages attributed to him, many continue to seek his intercession for healing, particularly in relation to eye ailments. The feast day of Saint Ithamar of Rochester is celebrated on the 10th of June, serving as an occasion for the faithful to remember and honor his sanctity and his significant contribution to the growth of Christianity in England.
