Biography

Saint Ismael of Menevia, also known as Osmail or Ysfael, was a holy man and bishop in Wales during the sixth century. Born in Brittany, France, Saint Ismael was the son of Budic, the prince of Cornouaille. Due to political circumstances, Budic was forced into exile in Dyfed, Wales, and his three sons, including Ismael, accompanied him. Although Budic eventually returned to Brittany, Ismael and his brothers decided to remain in Wales, where they dedicated their lives to the spiritual path. Ismael became a student of Saint Teilo of Llandaff, a notable Welsh saint and bishop. Under Teilo's mentorship, Ismael received extensive spiritual guidance and education. Impressed with Ismael's devotion and knowledge, Saint Teilo ordained him as the bishop of Menevia, a significant ecclesiastical center in Wales. Ismael's consecration as bishop took place during a time when the Church was rapidly expanding its influence and establishing a strong presence in Wales.
