Biography

Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide, also known as Joseph Yuen, Joseph Uen, Josef Yuan Zaide, and Ruose, was a Catholic Priest in the apostolic vicariate of Sichuan and one of the Martyrs of China. He is venerated for his unwavering faith and ultimate sacrifice in the face of persecution. Born around 1766 in Peng Co., Sichuan, China, little is known about Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide's early life and upbringing. However, it is evident that he had a deep calling to serve God and pursued a religious vocation. Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide dedicated his life to the priesthood and was ordained in the apostolic vicariate of Sichuan, a challenging time for Catholicism in China. During this period, Christianity faced significant opposition and hostility from the Qing Dynasty, which perceived it as a threat to their authority. Despite the risks, Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide fearlessly carried out his pastoral duties, spreading the Gospel and ministering to the faithful in Sichuan. He offered spiritual solace, guidance, and sacraments to the Catholic community, striving to strengthen their faith in the face of adversity. Sadly, the intense persecution against Christians continued to escalate during Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide's lifetime. On 24 June 1817, he was captured and subsequently strangled in Chengdu, Sichuan, in a cruel act of martyrdom. The heroic manner in which he embraced death for his faith earned him great reverence among the Catholic faithful. The recognition of Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide's martyrdom came much later, on 2 July 1899, when Pope Leo XIII officially declared him venerable. This acknowledgment signified that he had lived a life of heroic virtue and had willingly sacrificed himself for the sake of the Gospel. Subsequently, on 27 May 1900, Pope Leo XIII beatified Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide along with other Martyrs of China, recognizing their collective witness to the Catholic faith and their ultimate sacrifice. This beatification ceremony elevated him to the status of "Blessed." Finally, on 1 October 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide, officially recognizing him as a Saint of the Catholic Church. This canonization ceremony, which took place in Rome, celebrated his exemplary life, unwavering faith, and ultimate sacrifice. He was now seen as a role model for Catholics, providing inspiration and intercession for those facing persecution and challenging circumstances. Throughout his life, Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide remained steadfast in his commitment to God and the Church, even in the face of extreme danger. As one of the Martyrs of China, he serves as a reminder of the profound courage and unwavering faith of those who are willing to lay down their lives for their beliefs. Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide's feast days are celebrated on 24 June and 28 September, alongside the other Martyrs of China, honoring their collective sacrifice and giving thanks for their intercession. Although his patronage may not be specified, Saint Iosephus Yuan Zaide's life continues to inspire countless faithful believers around the world.
