Biography

Saint Iosephus Yuan Gengyin, also known as Ruose, was a layman merchant in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. He was born around 1853 in Hui, Zaoqiang, Hebei, China. Though not much is known about his early life, it is believed that he lived a devout Christian life and exemplified unwavering faith. During the late 19th century, China was facing numerous internal and external challenges, including political unrest and the rise of anti-Christian sentiments. This tumultuous period gave birth to the Yihetuan movement, also known as the Boxer movement, which sought to expel foreign influences from China and targeted Christians as well. Unfortunately, Saint Iosephus became a victim of this movement due to his strong Christian beliefs. In the year 1900, followers of the Yihetuan movement seized Saint Iosephus Yuan Gengyin, recognizing him as a Christian. Despite the grave danger he faced, he refused to renounce his faith in Christ. Instead, he courageously faced his captors, openly declaring his devotion to the Catholic Church and his refusal to abandon his beliefs. Saint Iosephus endured torment and persecution, but his steadfastness remained unwavering until the end. It was towards the end of July 1900 when Saint Iosephus Yuan Gengyin met his martyr's death in the town of Dayin, Zaoqiang, Hebei, China. His martyrdom was the ultimate testament to his unwavering faith in the face of adversity, making him a shining example of Christian fortitude. Years after his death, Pope Pius XII recognized the sanctity and heroism of Saint Iosephus and declared him venerable on 22 February 1955, with a decree of martyrdom. A month later, on 17 April 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified him, acknowledging his sacrifice and devotion to the Catholic Church. Finally, on 1 October 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Iosephus Yuan Gengyin, raising him to the highest honor of the Catholic Church. His canonization served as a testament to his exemplary life, his unyielding dedication to Christ, and his bravery in the face of persecution. Though there are no specific patronages attributed to Saint Iosephus, his life serves as an inspiration to all Christians, especially those facing adversity and persecution for their faith. He is remembered annually on 30 July, the day set aside to honor his memory and celebrate his courageous life as a martyr for Christ.
