Death: May 27, 1839
Saint Iosephus Chang Songjib, also known as Joseph Chang Song-jib, Giuseppe Chang Song-jib, and Yosep Jang Seong-jib, was a married layman in the apostolic vicariate of Korea during the 19th century. He was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1786. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he worked as a pharmacist. At some point in his life, Iosephus Chang Songjib underwent a profound conversion and embraced the Catholic faith. He became a devout follower of Christ, living out his faith with integrity and courage. During the Joseon Dynasty, the Korean government had restricted and persecuted the spread of Christianity in the country. Catholics faced immense challenges and were often subjected to fierce persecution for their beliefs. Iosephus Chang Songjib was not exempt from these struggles. Despite the risks, Iosephus Chang Songjib fearlessly practiced and shared his faith. His dedication to the Catholic Church led to his recognition as a martyr. He endured imprisonment, torture, and was eventually left to die in prison for refusing to renounce his faith. On May 27, 1839, Iosephus Chang Songjib passed away in the Seoul Prison in South Korea. After his death, the devotion and admiration for Iosephus Chang Songjib grew within the Catholic community. Pope Pius XI recognized his martyrdom on May 9, 1925, officially venerated him. Furthermore, on July 5, 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified him, acknowledging his holiness and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith. Years later, on May 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Iosephus Chang Songjib as a saint, affirming his exemplary life of faith and his status as a role model for Catholics worldwide. Though not known as a patron for any particular cause or group, Saint Iosephus Chang Songjib's life continues to inspire believers to stand firm in their faith despite adversity. His feast day is celebrated on May 26 and September 20, along with the Martyrs of Korea, commemorating all those who suffered and died for their Catholic faith in Korea during the persecution of the 19th century. Through the life and martyrdom of Saint Iosephus Chang Songjib, Catholics are reminded of the importance of steadfast faith, even in the face of grave persecution, and the ultimate reward of eternal life with God.
