Biography

Saint Iosephus Chang Chugi, also known as Yosep Jang Ju-gi, Joseph, Giuseppe, and José, was born in 1803 in Suwon, Kyonggi-do, South Korea, to a wealthy family with a history of working as diplomats. He was an adult convert to Christianity and at the age of 26, he, along with his entire family, was baptized. This marked a significant turning point in his life, as he dedicated himself to serving God and spreading the Christian faith. Iosephus began his work as a catechist, conducting classes first in his own home and later in a small building that he personally purchased and maintained for that purpose in Paeron, Korea. Despite facing government persecution of Christians, he remained steadfast in his commitment to share the teachings of Christ with others. On four occasions, Iosephus was forced to hide in the mountains to avoid arrest and persecution. In 1845, Iosephus made the decision to move to the Jecheon area to escape continued government persecution. It was during this time that Saint Siméon-François Berneux, a French missionary, built a seminary in the region. Iosephus generously offered his own house for the seminary's use and worked diligently in its administration. He and his wife also engaged in farming to help feed the seminarians, showcasing their unwavering dedication to the growth of the Church. However, their commitment to the faith would eventually lead to their arrest in March 1866. Local officials intervened and secured their release, but just five days later, Iosephus was arrested once again. During his trial, he fearlessly admitted to being a Christian, teaching Christianity, aiding missionaries, and even owning the building where the catechists had conducted their work for many years. For his unwavering faith and tireless efforts in spreading the Gospel, Iosephus was imprisoned, tortured, and eventually executed. On 30th March 1866, he was beheaded in Galmaemot, Boryeong, Chungcheong-do, South Korea, sealing his status as a martyr. Saint Iosephus Chang Chugi's martyrdom did not go unnoticed. On 4th July 1968, Pope Paul VI recognized his heroic virtues and declared him venerable. Later, on 6th October 1968, he was beatified by Pope Paul VI, affirming his devotion to God and his exemplary life as a witness of Christ's love. Finally, on 6th May 1984, he was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II. Saint Iosephus Chang Chugi's life and sacrifice continue to inspire and remind us of the immense courage and dedication of those who stand firm in their faith, even in the face of persecution. His feast days are celebrated on 30th March and 20th September as one of the Martyrs of Korea, and he remains a shining example of love, faith, and sacrifice for all believers.
