Biography

Saint Ioannes Yi Munu, also known as Yohan Yi Mun-u, John Yi Mun-u, or Giovanni Yi Mun-u, was a married layman who lived in the apostolic vicariate of Korea during the 19th century. Born in 1810 in Inchon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, he dedicated his life to ministering to the poor and providing Christian burial to martyrs. While little is known about Saint Ioannes Yi Munu's early life, it is clear that he possessed a deep faith and desire to serve others. He lived during a time when Christianity faced severe persecution in Korea, with the government actively suppressing the spread of the religion. Despite these dangers, Saint Ioannes Yi Munu fearlessly embraced his faith and worked tirelessly to bring comfort and solace to those in need. One of his primary missions was to provide Christian burial to those who had given their lives for their faith. As a result of his commitment, he gained a reputation for ensuring that martyrs were properly laid to rest, giving them the proper respect and burial rites that their sacrifice deserved. Sadly, Saint Ioannes Yi Munu's dedication to the oppressed and the suffering ultimately led to his own martyrdom. On 1 February 1840, in Dangkogae, Seoul, South Korea, he was arrested for his Christian activities and beheaded. His execution marked the culmination of his unwavering devotion to his faith and his selfless service to those in need. In recognition of his heroic life and his ultimate sacrifice, Saint Ioannes Yi Munu was venerated on 9 May 1925 by Pope Pius XI, who declared him a martyr. Later that year, on 5 July 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity. Finally, on 6 May 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Ioannes Yi Munu, recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. Saint Ioannes Yi Munu's life serves as an inspiration for all believers, as he fearlessly lived out his faith amidst persecution and dedicated himself to serving the poor and ministering to the oppressed.
