Biography

Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhao Mingxi, also known as Zhao Mingxi Ioannes Baptista, Ruohan, and Giovan Battista Zhao Mingxi, was a layman Christian in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. He was born around 1844 in Beiwangtou, Shenzhou, Hebei, China. Little is known about Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhao Mingxi's early life, but he later became a devoted Christian and actively participated in the growth of the Catholic Church in China during a time of great adversity. He lived during the late Qing dynasty, a time when Western influence and Christianity were viewed with suspicion by the Chinese government. Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhao Mingxi lived during a period of intense persecution of Christians in China, particularly during the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901). The Boxer Rebellion was a violent uprising against foreign influence and Christianity, aimed at removing both Western powers and their religious followers from China. During the Boxer Rebellion, Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhao Mingxi demonstrated great courage and selflessness by attempting to rescue women and children who were being targeted by the rebels. Despite the danger, he dedicated himself to protecting the lives of the innocent, which ultimately cost him his own life. On July 3, 1900, Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhao Mingxi was martyred in Beiwangtou, Shenzhou, Hebei, China. He was killed by the rebels while trying to save those in need. His willingness to sacrifice himself for others is a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to his Christian values. His heroic actions did not go unnoticed, and in recognition of his martyrdom and virtuous life, Pope Pius XII declared him venerable on February 22, 1955. Following this decree, Pope Pius XII beatified him on April 17, 1955, acknowledging his exemplary life and martyrdom. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhao Mingxi was canonized by Pope John Paul II, officially recognizing him as a saint within the Catholic Church. His canonization highlighted his extraordinary witness to the Christian faith and his selfless dedication to protecting and serving others, even in the face of grave danger. Although there is no specific representation associated with Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhao Mingxi, his life serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, selflessness, and unwavering devotion to one's faith. As a saint, he continues to inspire believers globally to live out their faith with courage and love for their fellow human beings.
