Biography

Saint Herulph of Langres, also known as Herulph of Ellwangen or Hariolfus, was born to the nobility as the son of the Count of Ellwangen, in what is now modern Germany. Little is known about his early life, but he dedicated himself to a life of piety and virtue. Herulph's desire for a deeper spiritual life led him to become a Benedictine monk at the famous abbey of Saint Gall in Switzerland. Here, he immersed himself in the rigorous monastic practices of prayer, work, and contemplation. His fervor and dedication soon made him stand out among his peers, and he was recognized for his holiness and wisdom. In 764, feeling called by God to establish a new spiritual foundation, Herulph left Saint Gall and founded the Ellwangen Abbey in what is now the diocese of Augsburg, Germany. This abbey became a center of learning and spirituality under his guidance, attracting many devout men and women to its walls. Herulph diligently worked to cultivate the religious life of the community, establishing a rule of life that emphasized prayer, study, and self-discipline. Herulph's reputation as a scholar and spiritual leader continued to grow, and in 781, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Langres. As a bishop, he worked tirelessly to shepherd his flock, preaching the Gospel and encouraging his clergy and laity to live lives of holiness and virtue. His pastoral care extended to all, regardless of their social status or position, and he was known for his compassion and humility. Saint Herulph's impact extended beyond his own diocese. His writings on theology and spirituality became widely respected, and his influence reached far beyond the borders of his own community. He was known for his ability to inspire others to deepen their relationship with God and to live out their faith in practical ways. Saint Herulph of Langres passed away in 785 of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of faith, scholarship, and holiness. Although not much is known about his specific patronage, he continues to be venerated as a model of virtue and devotion in the Catholic Church. Saint Herulph was recognized as a saint before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and therefore his canonization occurred prior to the establishment of the Canon Law procedures for canonization. As a result, he is considered to be canonized before the pre-congregation period. His feast day is celebrated on August 13th, a day dedicated to honoring his memory and asking for his intercession. Today, Saint Herulph's life serves as an inspiration and example for all who seek to live a life of faithfulness and service. His commitment to prayer, his scholarly contributions, and his pastoral leadership leave a lasting legacy that continues to inspire and guide believers down the path of holiness.
