Biography

Saint Harduin of Fontenelle, also known as Arduin or Arduino, was a Benedictine monk and priest who lived in the monastery of Saint-Wandrille in Fontenelle, Rouen, Normandy (in modern France). He was born in the year 749 in Alvimare, in the diocese of Rouen, Seine-Maritime, Gaul (in modern France). Saint Harduin was known for his deep spirituality, dedication to prayer, and love for study. As a monk of the Benedictine order, Saint Harduin lived a life of contemplation, following the Rule of Saint Benedict. He was a fervent copyist of the writings of the Fathers of the Church, diligently transcribing and preserving their works. His skills in calligraphy and mathematics were highly valued, and he also shared his knowledge with others, teaching these subjects to fellow monks. Saint Harduin sought a more solitary life and obtained permission to live as a hermit. He chose to live locked in a cell near the abbey, where he could devote himself entirely to prayer and study. Despite his secluded lifestyle, he remained connected to the community and actively participated in the life of the monastery. At some point in his life, Saint Harduin embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome during the papacy of Pope Hadrian I. This pilgrimage allowed him to deepen his faith and draw inspiration from the holy city and its spiritual heritage. Saint Harduin passed away on 12 July 811 at Fontenelle, France, dying of natural causes. He was buried at the church of Saint Paul within the monastery. His exemplary life, dedicated to prayer, study, and service, soon earned him a reputation for holiness among his fellow monks. Although Saint Harduin does not have any specific patronages associated with him, his deep spirituality and devotion to learning make him a model for those seeking to grow in their faith and acquire knowledge. His feast day is celebrated on 12 July, and on some calendars, it is also observed on 20 April. While Saint Harduin's representation is not specified, his life as a monk, copyist, and scholar could be depicted in art through symbols such as an open book, quill and ink, monastic attire, or a cell door. These symbols would represent the various aspects of his life and spiritual journey. Saint Harduin of Fontenelle was canonized before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, known as Pre-Congregation. His sanctity was recognized by the local church and the faithful who venerated him for his piety, wisdom, and selflessness. His life serves as an inspiration to all who seek to deepen their faith through prayer, study, and service.
