Biography

Saint Guitmarus, also known as Guimar, Guimare, Guimer, Guimero, Guitmaire, Guitmar, Guitmer, Gutmaire, Vitmar, Vitmarus, Widmar, Widmer, Wirmarus, Witmaire, Witmar, and Witmer, was an important figure in the early years of Christianity. He was an Abbot at Saint-Riquier Abbey in Normandy, France, in the year 742. Little is known about the early life of Saint Guitmarus, but it is believed that he was born in the 8th century. He dedicated himself to a life of service to God and entered the monastic community at Saint-Riquier Abbey. As an Abbot, he took charge of the spiritual and administrative responsibilities of the abbey, guiding and leading the monks in their daily religious practices and serving as their spiritual mentor. One notable event in Saint Guitmarus' life was his attendance at the Council of Attigny-sur-Aisne in 765. This council, convened by King Pippin the Short of the Franks, aimed to address important religious matters and establish unity within the Frankish Christian community. Saint Guitmarus played an active role in the council, contributing to the discussions and decisions made concerning the Christian faith. Saint Guitmarus lived a life of piety and devotion, dedicated to the service of God and the spiritual wellbeing of his community. He was buried in the church of Saint Stephen, located in Gournai-en-Bray in Normandy, France. The precise details of his canonization are not available, but it is known that he was recognized as a saint by the Pre-Congregation, a term used to refer to the period before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in the late 16th century.
