Biography

Saint Guibertus of Gorze, also known as Guibertus of Gembloux, was born into the French nobility in the Lorraine region of France. As a young man, he embarked on a military career and participated in various campaigns. However, his heart longed for a more contemplative and spiritual life. After his military service, Guibertus retreated to his estates at Gembloux, Brabant, which is now modern-day Belgium. There, he decided to dedicate his life to God and became a hermit. His intense spiritual life and devotion to prayer attracted the attention of the local community. Guibertus's reputation as a holy man grew, and he soon found himself drawn into the establishment of a new monastery in Gembloux. Despite his desire for a quiet life away from the world, Guibertus was repeatedly called upon to defend the rights of the foundation he had established for the monastery.
