Biography

Saint Guarinus of Palestrina, also known as Guarinus of Bologna, was born around the year 1080 into a noble family in Bologna, Italy. He dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church, eventually becoming a revered figure in Catholic history. After being ordained as a priest, Guarinus took on the role of a canon at the cathedral of Bologna. He also joined the Augustinian Canons Regular, a religious order known for their strict adherence to a communal lifestyle. Guarinus flourished within the order and made significant contributions to the spiritual life of his community. In 1139, Guarinus was unexpectedly chosen as the bishop of Pavia, a prestigious and important role within the Church. However, despite the honor bestowed upon him, Guarinus humbly and adamantly refused the appointment, proclaiming his own inadequacy for such a significant responsibility. Recognizing his genuine reluctance and profound humility, the Church hierarchy respected his decision. His devotion and piety did not go unnoticed, and in 1144, Pope Lucius II elevated Guarinus to the position of cardinal-bishop of Palestrina.
