Biography

Saint Grimbald, also known as Grimwald or Grimbold, was a Benedictine monk and an influential figure in the early medieval Church. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was born in the 9th century in Flanders, Belgium. Grimbald's reputation for holiness and knowledge caught the attention of Alfred of England, who later became King Alfred the Great. Impressed by Grimbald's virtues and wisdom, Alfred requested him to come to England and share his knowledge and holiness. Around the year 885, Grimbald arrived in England and quickly made a name for himself. Known for his deep understanding of Scripture, mastery in music, and exemplary sanctity, Grimbald captivated many with his teachings and presence. One of Grimbald's notable contributions was the establishment of the University of Oxford. Recognizing the need for a center of education and learning, Grimbald played a crucial role in the foundation of this renowned university. Furthermore, he served as its first professor of divinity, instilling his knowledge and spiritual wisdom into future generations of students. Despite his remarkable achievements, Grimbald was a humble man who declined the prestigious position of the bishopric of Canterbury. Instead, he chose to live a simple life of contemplation and devotion. He retired to Winchester, where he received encouragement from King Alfred to establish the monastery of Newminster. Grimbald's reputation and devotion earned him a position as the first abbot of Newminster. Under his leadership, the monastery thrived, attracting many devoted monks eager to learn from the saintly abbot. Grimbald's influence extended far beyond the walls of the monastery, touching the lives of countless individuals who sought his guidance and spiritual insight. After spending two decades in England, Grimbald fell ill. In his final days, he prepared himself for the journey to the afterlife, receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion and spending time in deep contemplation. Sensing that his time on earth was drawing to a close, Grimbald summoned the monks of his community to his room for a final time of fellowship. With his brethren gathered around him, Grimbald peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of holiness, knowledge, and devotion. Despite not being officially recognized as a patron saint, his impact and influence endure throughout history, commemorated by the Church on July 8th, the feast day of Saint Grimbald. Although Grimbald's canonization occurred before the formal process of canonization was established, his exemplary life and the veneration he received from the faithful testify to his saintly status. As a dedicated scholar, a wise spiritual leader, and a devout servant of God, Saint Grimbald continues to inspire generations with his unwavering faith and commitment to the pursuit of holiness.
