Feast Day: August 6
Saint Glisente of Brescia, also known as Glisente of Mount Berzo, is recognized as a pious and devoted saint in the Catholic Church. Little is known about his early life or family background, but historical records indicate that he lived during the time of Blessed Charlemagne. Glisente served as a soldier in the army of Blessed Charlemagne, known for his heroic defense of the faith and his loyalty to the Christian cause. It was during the battle of Mortirolo that Glisente displayed his bravery and valor, fighting alongside his fellow soldiers in defense of the kingdom. However, after this significant conflict, Glisente felt called to a different path in life, one that involved solitude, prayer, and evangelization. Following the battle of Mortirolo, Glisente made the decision to retire from military life and pursue a life of devotion as a hermit. He set up his hermitage on Mount Berzo, located near Brescia, Italy. In this solitary and serene environment, Glisente dedicated himself to deepening his relationship with God through prayer, contemplation, and meditation. While living as a hermit, Glisente also became known for his love and compassion towards animals. His interactions with various creatures from the surrounding wilderness became well-known, as he would often offer them refuge, food, and protection. This love for animals further exemplified Glisente's gentle and caring nature, mirroring the teachings of Jesus to care for all of God's creations. Not content with a life limited to his hermitage, Glisente took on the role of an evangelist, spreading the Gospel throughout the valley region around Mount Berzo. His zealousness for the faith and dedication to sharing the message of God's love and salvation made a significant impact on the local communities. Many locals were touched by Glisente's humility, his deep faith, and his devoted service to God and others. Saint Glisente of Brescia passed away in the year 796 on Mount Berzo, the very place where he had established his hermitage. In honor of his life and spiritual contributions, a parish church was built on his tomb on the side of the mountain. The faithful continue to venerate him, particularly in his birthplace of Berzo Inferiore, Italy. While Glisente of Brescia's representation and patronage are not explicitly known, his life serves as a powerful example of a faithful servant of God who demonstrated immense courage, selflessness, and love for all creation. Though he lived in an era long past, the legacy of Saint Glisente continues to inspire believers to follow his footsteps of devotion and compassion.
