Biography

Saint Giusto of Novalesa, also known as Giusto of Susa, was a devout monk who lived during the 9th century in Novalesa Abbey, located in present-day Italy. His life was tragically cut short when he was martyred by Saracen raiders. Born in the 9th century, Saint Giusto dedicated his life to God at an early age. He joined the community of Novalesa Abbey, which was known for its commitment to monasticism and its reputation as a center of learning and prayer. As a monk, Giusto embraced a life of solitude, prayer, and asceticism, seeking a deeper connection with God. Sadly, during this period, the region faced frequent attacks by Saracen raiders, who were known for their pillaging and violence. It was during one of these raiding incidents that Saint Giusto met his tragic fate. While steadfastly defending the abbey and its inhabitants from the invaders, he suffered martyrdom, sacrificing his life in defense of his faith and the community he loved. After his death, Saint Giusto's remains were initially buried in the abbey grounds. However, as years went by, the exact location of his burial became lost in time. It was only later that his relics were rediscovered and enshrined in the cathedral of Susa, Italy. Saint Giusto's exemplary life and sacrifice did not go unnoticed by the faithful. The sanctity and holiness he exhibited led to his canonization as a saint by the Catholic Church. Although the exact details of his canonization process are not well-documented, it is known that he was venerated as a saint even before formal canonization processes were established. Therefore, he is considered a pre-congregation saint. As a revered saint, Saint Giusto holds a special place in the hearts of many. He is honored as the patron saint of Mentoulles, Ronco Canavese, San Giusto Canavese, and Susa, Italy. His intercession is sought by those who live in these regions, particularly in difficult times. The feast day of Saint Giusto is celebrated on the 19th of October each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. On this day, the faithful gather in prayer and reflection, seeking his heavenly intercession and drawing inspiration from his unwavering faith and sacrifice. Saint Giusto of Novalesa serves as a shining example of faith, courage, and selflessness. His life stands as a testament to the power of devotion, even in the face of persecution and adversity. May his memory continue to inspire and guide all who seek spiritual strength and consolation.
