Biography

Saint Giuse Pham Trong Ta, also known as Giuseppe Pham Trong (Cai) Ta, was a married lay Dominican who lived during a time of intense persecution against Catholics in Vietnam. He was born around 1800 in Quan Cong, Nam Ðinh, Vietnam, during a period when the Catholic faith was rapidly growing in the region. Giuse Pham Trong Ta embraced the Christian faith and became a zealous and devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He entered into the Sacrament of Matrimony and, together with his wife, dedicated themselves to living out their faith within the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin, which is modern-day Vietnam. During the reign of Emperor Tu-Duc, a violent persecution against Christians erupted. The emperor aimed to eradicate Christianity from Vietnam and imposed strict measures to force Catholic converts to renounce their faith. One of these measures included stepping on a cross as a symbol of renouncing Christianity. Giuse Pham Trong Ta, true to his steadfast faith, refused to renounce his belief in Christ. Despite undergoing intense persecution, torture, and pressure to reject his faith, he remained resolute. He chose to endure suffering and even face death rather than renounce his love for Jesus Christ and trample on the holy symbol of the cross. On January 13, 1859, in Nam Ðinh, Vietnam, Saint Giuse Pham Trong Ta was martyred for his unwavering commitment to Christ. He was executed for his refusal to comply with the emperor's order to renounce his faith. His martyrdom is a testament to his deep love for God and his unwavering devotion to the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XII officially recognized the sanctity and martyrdom of Giuse Pham Trong Ta on February 11, 1951, issuing a decree proclaiming him venerable. Later that year, on April 29, Pope Pius XII beatified him, acknowledging his heroic virtues and sacrifice. Finally, on June 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized him, recognizing him as a saint and model of faith for all Catholics. Saint Giuse Pham Trong Ta is remembered and honored on January 13 and November 24, as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam. His courageous witness serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live out their faith in the face of adversity. Although there is no specific patronage attributed to him, Saint Giuse Pham Trong Ta is a shining example of bravery, fidelity, and devotion to Christ. His life reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless martyrs throughout history and the enduring power of faith in the face of persecution.
