Biography

Saint Giovanni Battista Clemente Saggio, also known as Nicola da Longobardi or Nicholas of the Longobards, was born on 6 January 1650 in Longobardi, Cosenza, Italy. He was born into a poor peasant family but showed exceptional intelligence and a strong inclination towards religious devotion from an early age. Despite his passion for learning, Giovanni was unable to pursue formal education due to financial constraints. Instead, he had to assist his father in working the fields. However, this did not deter Giovanni from deepening his faith and spirituality. He would often spend entire days in prayer at a local Minim church, demonstrating his dedication to God. When Giovanni turned 20 years old, he made the decision to follow his calling to religious life, despite his family's objections. Legend has it that when his mother objected to his decision, Giovanni was struck blind. It was only when she agreed to let him pursue his vocation that his sight was restored miraculously. This incident further strengthened his resolve to join the religious order. Giovanni joined the Order of the Minims as an Oblate friar. Taking the name Nicola, he dedicated his life to a rigorous practice of prayer, self-discipline, and service to others. Nicola became renowned for his holiness and his ability to perform miracles, earning him a reputation as a miracle worker. Throughout his life, Nicola demonstrated profound spiritual insight and an unwavering commitment to his faith. It is said that he possessed the gift of prophecy and accurately predicted the date and time of his own death. He passed away peacefully on 2 February 1709 in Rome, Italy, succumbing to natural causes. Nicola's exceptional virtue and reputation for holiness endured even after his death. On 17 September 1786, he was beatified by Pope Pius VI, officially recognized for his blessed state in heaven. The culmination of his journey towards sainthood came on 23 November 2014, when Pope Francis canonized Nicola. The canonization ceremony took place in Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Rome, Italy, attracting pilgrims from all over the world. Saint Giovanni Battista Clemente Saggio, or Nicholas of the Longobards, holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Longobardi, Italy, who consider him their patron saint. His life serves as an inspiration to all, emphasizing the importance of faith, perseverance, and selflessness in the pursuit of holiness.
