Biography

Saint Gioan Baotixta Ðinh Van Thành, also known as John Baptist Dinh Van Than, was a dedicated layman catechist in the apostolic vicariate of West Tonkin, which is located in modern Vietnam. He collaborated closely with the Society of Foreign Missionaries, actively spreading the teachings of the Catholic faith in his region. Born around 1796 in Nôn Khê, Ninh Bình, Vietnam, Dinh Van Than lived during a time when Christians faced intense persecution for their beliefs. Despite the risks, he fearlessly proclaimed his faith and tirelessly worked to bring others to Christ. During the persecutions of Emperor Minh Mang, Saint Gioan Baotixta Ðinh Van Thành endured great suffering for his unwavering commitment to Christianity. For three years, he was imprisoned and subjected to brutal torture, all in an attempt to coerce him into denouncing his faith. However, Saint Gioan Baotixta Ðinh Van Thành remained steadfast in his devotion, refusing to renounce his belief in Christ. On 28 April 1840, in Ninh Bình, Vietnam, Saint Gioan Baotixta Ðinh Van Thành was tragically beheaded, sealing his place as a martyr for the faith. His courageous refusal to deny his Christianity, despite the unbearable suffering he endured, became an exemplar of unwavering devotion to God. Recognizing his exceptional witness to the Christian faith, Pope Leo XIII issued a decree of martyrdom on 2 July 1899, formally venerating Saint Gioan Baotixta Ðinh Van Thành. Then, on 27 May 1900, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, further acknowledging his virtuous life and sacrificial death. Finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Gioan Baotixta Ðinh Van Thành, officially declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. The canonization reaffirmed his extraordinary sanctity and the profound impact his life had on the Church and the faithful. Today, Saint Gioan Baotixta Ðinh Van Thành stands as a shining example of unwavering faith, resilience, and dedication to the Catholic Church.
