Biography

Saint Gerold of Evreux, also known as Gerold of Fontenelle, was a noble courtier who served under the rule of Blessed Charlemagne. He made the courageous decision to leave behind his lavish court life and embrace the monastic vocation. Gerold entered the renowned Abbey of Fontenelle, located in Normandy, France, where he dedicated himself to a life of prayer, study, and service to God. Gerold's fervent devotion and commitment to the monastic life did not go unnoticed, and he was eventually ordained as a bishop. In 787, he became the Bishop of Evreux, a city located in the present-day region of Normandy. As bishop, Gerold diligently worked to shepherd the faithful and promote the teachings of the Catholic Church. However, as Gerold grew older, he felt a deep longing to return to the contemplative life he had initially embraced at Fontenelle. Recognizing this call from God, he made the difficult decision to resign his prestigious position as Bishop of Evreux. With the permission of his superiors, Gerold returned to the abbey and resumed his monastic life. Throughout his life, Saint Gerold exemplified humility, simplicity, and a deep love for God. He dedicated his days to prayer, fasting, and works of charity. Many sought his wisdom and guidance, as Gerold was known for his holiness and spiritual insight. Saint Gerold of Evreux passed away in 806 of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of faith and devotion.
