Biography

Saint Gerinus, also known as Garino, Garinus, Gerino, Guarinus, Wannus, Warinus, Warren, or Werinus, was a martyr of the Christian faith. He was born to Saint Sigrada and was the brother of Saint Leodegarius. The exact details of his birth and early life are scarce, but his renowned faith and dedication to his beliefs would shape his destiny. During the medieval period, the Christian faith faced numerous challenges and persecutions. One of these adversaries was Ebroin, the mayor of the French palace, who found himself in opposition to Saint Leodegarius, Gerinus' brother. Ebroin viewed Leodegarius as a threat and sought to undermine his influence and power. Saint Gerinus became entangled in this political and religious conflict due to his close relationship with his brother. Ebroin sought to bring harm to Leodegarius by persecuting those close to him, Gerinus included. Despite the threats he faced, Gerinus remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith. Unfortunately, this unwavering dedication to Christianity ultimately resulted in Gerinus paying the ultimate price. In the year 676, near Arras, France, he was stoned to death by Ebroin and his supporters. His martyrdom serves as a testament to the strength of his convictions and his refusal to renounce his beliefs, even in the face of imminent death. Saint Gerinus was officially canonized as a saint by the Pre-Congregation, a term referring to a time before the formal process of canonization was established in the Catholic Church.
