Biography

Saint George of Amastris, also known as George of Kromna, was a revered figure in the Catholic Church who dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and the protection of his community. Born in Kromna, a small village near Amastris on the Black Sea, little is known about his early life. Saint George embraced an ascetic lifestyle and sought solitude as a hermit on Mount Sirik. He spent many years in deep contemplation and strict self-discipline, seeking a closer connection with God. During this period of spiritual isolation, George honed his understanding of religious teachings and developed a profound piety and devotion. After years of living as a hermit, Saint George felt called to join a monastic community. He left Mount Sirik and joined the monks at the renowned Bonyssa Monastery. There, he immersed himself in the communal life of prayer, work, and study, further deepening his spiritual formation. George's unwavering faith and intellectual acumen did not go unnoticed by his peers. He was soon ordained as a priest in recognition of his profound knowledge and dedication. His ascetic practices and wisdom led to his appointment as the bishop of Amastris, a city located in modern-day Amasra, Turkey. As bishop, Saint George assumed a dual role in both tending to the spiritual needs of his flock and protecting them from external threats. During the Saracen attacks on Amastris, George valiantly led the city's defense, successfully thwarting the assailants and preserving the safety of his people. This courageous act elevated his reputation as a defender of the faith and a symbol of protection. Saint George's life was marked by his unyielding faith, self-sacrifice, and compassion towards others. His writings on theological matters and spiritual meditation continue to inspire believers to this day, although much of his works were lost over the centuries. It is believed that his teachings focused on humility, prayer, and the importance of living a righteous life. Saint George of Amastris died around the year 825, having lived a long and meaningful life. It is said that he passed away peacefully from natural causes, surrounded by fellow monks and faithful followers who were deeply moved by his exemplary life of devotion and righteousness. Though Saint George of Amastris has yet to receive an official patronage, he is venerated by many as a model of faith, piety, and courage. His feast day is celebrated annually on February 21st, a reminder of the profound impact he made during his time on earth.
