Biography

Saint Gengulphus of Burgundy, also known as Gengulphus of Avallon, was born to wealthy Burgundian nobility in Burgundy, France. He lived during the 8th century and from historical accounts, we understand that he began his life as a knight and courtier.

At some point in his life, Saint Gengulphus entered into a marriage with a noble woman who unfortunately proved to be frequently unfaithful. Despite the pain and shame caused by his wife's actions, Gengulphus did not wish her any harm. In an act of piety and humility, he chose to become a hermit, seeking solace in his castle located in Avallon, France. However, Gengulphus left his staff of servants to care for his wife.

Tragically, it was within the walls of his castle that Saint Gengulphus met his untimely demise. He was ruthlessly murdered in his bed by his wife's lover. Despite the circumstances of his death, Gengulphus remained devoted to his faith until the very end.

Saint Gengulphus is particularly revered in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the Savoy region. He is recognized as a patron saint for those experiencing difficult marriages, knights, separated spouses, victims of adultery, and victims of unfaithfulness.

When picturing Saint Gengulphus, one may envision a Burgundian knight with a fountain springing under his sword, symbolizing his faith and righteousness. He is often depicted holding a shield adorned with a cross, signifying his unwavering devotion to Christianity. Additionally, Saint Gengulphus is sometimes depicted holding the spear with which he was murdered, serving as a reminder of his martyrdom.

Saint Gengulphus of Burgundy's feast day is celebrated on May 11th. While his canonization occurred before the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, he remains venerated by the Catholic Church. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire believers to endure difficult circumstances and maintain faithfulness in the face of adversity.
