Biography

Saint Gaetano Catanoso, also known as Cajetan Catanoso, was born on 14 February 1879 in Chorio di San Lorenzo, Reggio Calabria, Italy. He was born into a wealthy and devout Catholic family, and from a young age, he felt a deep calling to serve God. Gaetano pursued his vocation and was ordained a priest on 20 September 1902. He began his ministry as a parish priest, dedicating himself to the spiritual well-being of his congregation. Recognizing the importance of devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, Gaetano established a Confraternity of the Holy Face in his parish. To spread this devotion further, he also launched a newsletter in 1920 that reached many people, carrying the message of the Holy Face throughout Italy. To encourage priestly vocations and ensure the future of the Church, Gaetano founded the Poor Clerics, a religious congregation aimed at inspiring young men to become priests. Through his efforts, the Poor Clerics grew and made a significant impact on the Church. In 1921, Gaetano was transferred to the Santa Maria de la Candelaria parish in Reggio Calabria, Italy. There, he dedicated himself to reviving Marian and Eucharistic devotions, improving catechesis, and promoting the observance of liturgical feasts. Recognizing the strength in cooperation, Gaetano worked tirelessly to unite local priests to provide missions by preaching and hearing confessions in each other's parishes. His mission was to strengthen the faith of the community and bring people closer to God. Throughout his life, Gaetano also served as a spiritual director for various religious institutions, a prison, hospital, and seminary. His guidance and care influenced the lives of many, helping them grow in their faith and find spiritual solace. In 1935, Gaetano founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Saint Veronica, also known as the Missionaries of the Holy Face. This congregation was established to teach, offer perpetual prayers, and work with the poor. The Daughters of Saint Veronica received diocesan approval in 1958 and continue their important mission today. Saint Gaetano Catanoso passed away on 4 April 1953 in Reggio Calabria, Italy, due to natural causes. His holiness and dedication to serving God and others were widely recognized. On 3 March 1990, Pope John Paul II declared Gaetano Catanoso's heroic virtues, leading to his veneration. He was beatified on 4 May 1997 by Pope John Paul II and canonized on 23 October 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome, Italy. Saint Gaetano Catanoso is now considered the patron saint of Reggio Calabria, Italy, a testament to his immense impact on the local community.
