Biography

Saint Fructos of Segovia, also known as Fruitos, Frutos, or Frutto, was a revered Catholic saint and a brother to the prominent saints, Saint Engratia of Segovia and Saint Valentine of Segovia. He was born in Sepulveda, Castile (in modern Spain), and lived during the tumultuous period when the Moors invaded the Iberian Peninsula. Fructos' life took an unexpected turn when his brother and sister were martyred by the invading Moors. Faced with the threat of persecution, he made the decision to flee from Segovia. Seeking solace and refuge, he withdrew from society and embraced the eremitic lifestyle. Fructos found a secluded spot where he could dedicate his life to prayer, meditation, and penance. As a hermit, Fructos lived a life of extreme austerity and constant devotion to God. Evident in his choice to distance himself from worldly distractions, he sought spiritual enlightenment through isolation. It is said that he devoted long hours to prayer, fasting, and contemplation, seeking a closer connection with the divine. Fructos remained in seclusion for the rest of his life, tirelessly practicing acts of piety and self-denial. His mortal remains were laid to rest in Segovia, Spain, where they became the focus of veneration and pilgrimage. Over the centuries, the remarkable holiness and extraordinary life of Fructos caught the attention of many faithful followers. Recognizing his sanctity and the numerous miracles attributed to his intercession, the Catholic Church formally canonized him as a saint. It is worth noting that Fructos attained sainthood before the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints; thus, his canonization is categorized as Pre-Congregation. Saint Fructos of Segovia holds a significant place in the reverence of the people of Segovia, Spain. As their patron saint, he is regarded as a powerful intercessor and protector of their city. The faithful continue to honor him on his feast day, which is celebrated on October 25th each year.
