Saint Francis Xavier Can Nguyen, also known as Phanxicô Xaviê Can, was a devoted layman and catechist who played a significant role in spreading Catholicism in Vietnam during the 19th century. Born around 1803 in Son Miêng, Hà Ðông, Vietnam, he dedicated his life to serving God and helping others through his strong faith. Francis Xavier Can Nguyen's life was closely interwoven with the Paris Foreign Mission Society, an organization dedicated to evangelizing non-Christian regions. Inspired by the Society's mission, he actively worked alongside foreign missionaries, assisting them in their efforts to spread the Catholic faith. His dedication and tireless efforts earned him much respect and admiration among his fellow Catholics. However, his unwavering commitment to his faith would ultimately lead to his arrest. Francis Xavier Can Nguyen was taken into custody due to his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs, despite intense pressure and the offer of freedom as a reward for his apostasy. This act of bravery and steadfastness in the face of adversity showcased his deep devotion to Christ and his commitment to remaining true to his faith. Tragically, Francis Xavier Can Nguyen's refusal to recant his beliefs sealed his fate. On November 20, 1837, he was strangled to death while imprisoned in Ô Cau Giay, Hanoi, Vietnam.
