Saint Francis Solano, also known as Francis Solanus, Francisco Solano, Thaumaturgus of the New World, and Wonder Worker of the New World, was born on March 10, 1549, in Montilla, which is located in the diocese of Cordova, Andalusia, Spain. He was the son of nobles Matthew Sanchez Solanus and Anna Ximenes. At the age of 20, Francis joined the Franciscans and dedicated his life to serving God and spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church. He began his journey as a preacher in southern Spain, delivering sermons and guiding others in their faith. Francis's dedication and passion for preaching earned him the role of novice master at Arifazza. In 1583, when a plague struck Granada, Francis fearlessly worked with the afflicted, tending to their needs and providing spiritual support. Unfortunately, he contracted the plague himself but miraculously recovered. In 1589, Francis embarked on a mission to South America alongside Father Balthazar Navarro. They arrived in Panama and then set sail further south. The ship carrying them was also transporting slaves, and Francis saw this as an opportunity for evangelization. Despite encountering a strong storm, Francis stayed with the slaves and administered baptism to them just before the ship crashed onto rocks. He managed to keep the slaves safe and organized for three days until help arrived. For the remainder of his life, Francis dedicated himself to missionary work in South America, particularly in Lima, Peru, where he worked with both the native population and Spanish colonists. His devotion was so exceptional that it is said he converted approximately 9,000 natives with a single sermon. One of Francis's remarkable talents was his ability to learn native languages and dialects quickly. He was known to preach to tribes speaking different tongues using one language and still be understood by all. Additionally, he had musical talents and would play the lute while singing before the altar. Francis was renowned for his healing abilities, and many sought his intercession for their ailments. Moreover, he held important positions within the Franciscan Order, serving as Custos of the Franciscan convents in Tucuman and Paraguay, and later being elected guardian of the Franciscan convent in Lima. Notably, Francis Solano had the gift of prophecy. He predicted both the destruction of Truxillo due to an earthquake and his own death. Saint Francis Solano passed away on July 14, 1610, in Lima, Peru, from natural causes. His impactful life and devotion to spreading the Gospel led to his beatification on June 30, 1675, by Pope Clement X, and his canonization on December 27, 1726, by Pope Benedict XIII. Saint Francis Solano is revered as the patron saint of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and the diocese of Añatuya, Argentina. His feast day is celebrated on July 14th each year. His legacy as a missionary, healer, linguist, and prophet continues to inspire and guide Catholics around the world.
