Biography

Saint Francis of Girolamo, also known as Francis di Girolamo, Francis de Geronimo, or Francis de Hieronymo, was born on 17 December 1642 in Grottaglie, Apulia, near Taranto, Italy. From an early age, Francis displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve the Church. At the age of sixteen, he began his studies in humanities and philosophy at the Jesuit college of Taranto. Recognizing his intellectual capabilities and spiritual fervor, Francis went on to study theology and canon law at the prestigious college of Gesu Vecchio. On 18 March 1666, he was ordained as a priest in Naples, Italy, and commenced his pastoral duties as a parish priest. However, Francis felt a further calling to deepen his commitment to God's work, leading him to join the Society of Jesus at the age of twenty-eight on 1 July 1670. As a Jesuit, Saint Francis dedicated himself to serving the rural communities around Naples for an impressive span of forty years. He became renowned for his dynamic and powerful preaching, captivating the hearts and minds of his listeners. His sermons were marked by their eloquence and ability to touch the deepest corners of the human spirit. Driven by his compassion for the marginalized and downtrodden, Saint Francis ventured into prisons, brothels, and galleys to minister to those forgotten by society. His charisma and genuine care led many prisoners, including Moors and Turkish prisoners of war, to conversion and spiritual transformation. One of his notable contributions was his relentless efforts to rescue children from dangerous and degrading situations. He worked tirelessly to provide them with a safe haven and an opportunity for a better future. Saint Francis also established a charity pawn shop, where those in need could find relief and support. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, Saint Francis organized laymen into a group called Oratio della Missione. This group aimed to assist fellow Jesuit missionaries in their work, providing both practical and spiritual support. Through this initiative, he fostered a sense of unity and common purpose among the laity. Saint Francis of Girolamo was attributed with numerous miraculous cures throughout his lifetime and even after his death. People believed that his intercession brought about these healings, and his reputation for holiness spread far and wide. When he passed away on 11 May 1716 in Naples, Italy, the people of Naples thronged his coffin during his funeral procession, a testament to the deep admiration and devotion he inspired. Although only a few of his letters have survived, they offer glimpses into his spiritual insights and pastoral guidance. Unfortunately, no recorded sermons from Saint Francis exist today. Nevertheless, his impact on the Church and society continues to be felt through the countless lives he touched and transformed. Saint Francis of Girolamo was beatified on 2 May 1806 by Pope Pius VII, recognizing his virtuous and holy life. On 26 May 1839, Pope Gregory XVI canonized him, officially declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. Grottaglie, his birthplace, holds him as their patron, honoring his memory and ongoing intercession. Saint Francis of Girolamo remains a shining example of selfless love and tireless service to God and others.
