Biography

Saint Francesc Gil De Federich De Sans was born on 14 December 1702 in Tortosa, Spain. He was highly educated in Barcelona and decided to dedicate his life to serving God by joining the Dominicans. After completing his studies, Francesc became a priest and was soon chosen to be a missionary. He was sent to the Philippines, where he devoted himself to spreading the Catholic faith among the local population. Francesc's commitment and piety were evident in his sincere efforts to bring people closer to God. In 1732, Francesc was assigned to another mission in Vietnam. He willingly accepted this new challenge and embarked on a journey to evangelize the people of Vietnam. Despite facing numerous challenges, Francesc remained steadfast in his mission, tirelessly preaching the Gospel and nurturing the faith of the Vietnamese Catholics. However, his unwavering commitment came at a great cost. Francesc was eventually captured and imprisoned for his faith. For nine long years, he endured unimaginable suffering and hardship in prison. Despite his imprisonment, Francesc never wavered in his dedication to God and continued to minister to his fellow prisoners, bringing them hope and faith. While in prison, Francesc also took charge of organizing and supervising evangelists who were working outside the prison walls. His leadership ensured that the Catholic faith continued to flourish amidst the tremendous adversity faced by the Vietnamese Catholic community. On 22 January 1745, Francesc faced the ultimate sacrifice for his faith. He was beheaded in Thang Long, Hanoi, Vietnam, joining the ranks of the Martyrs of Vietnam. His martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to spreading the Gospel, even at the cost of his own life. Years later, on 27 April 1904, Pope Saint Pius X recognized Francesc's martyrdom and venerated him. This was followed by the beatification of Francesc on 20 May 1906, also by Pope Saint Pius X. Finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized him, officially elevating Francesc to the status of a Catholic Saint. Saint Francesc Gil De Federich De Sans serves as an inspiration to all who encounter difficulties in their quest to follow God's path. His unwavering faith, missionary zeal, and selfless dedication to spreading the Gospel continue to inspire and guide Catholics worldwide.
